Description
Not far from Barcelona is the mountain aerie of Montserrat. It is well known as the site of the Benedictine abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat. As we arrived at the lower Montserrat train station, we were enveloped in fog and clouds, but as the smaller rack railroad carried us up the mountain to the abbey, we left the clouds and fog below. Unfortunately, the clouds below never burned off and the views to the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean did not materialize. Strike One. Then the funicular which took you partway up the mountain from the monastery was closed. Strike Two. I hadn't researched the hiking options so the path which led to Sant Jeroni seemed as good a hike as any. The summit was 'only' 1236 m or just over 4000' and turns out to be the highest point in the area. Later I read that a local hiking society said the difficulty level was 'moderate to hard' and the physical condition required was FIT! Had we known that, I am certain my husband would have opted out! Lucky for me we didn't know it. Still, the assessment of 'moderate to hard' was entirely accurate. This is the last few feet up to the top. Way off on the left, there is a little stone marker which you see first thing when you round a bend in the path and you think you are at the top. After nearly 2 hrs climbing, it's deflating to see that you aren't there yet, but you know you can't give up at that point!
