Description
Make a short walk up the hill from the seaside in Monterosso al Mare to visit the Church of San Francesco. I have seen it referred to as a convent, a church, and a monastery and I am not clear where the distinctions lie. Nevertheless, it is a prominent landmark in the town, sitting on the hill of San Cristoforo, which divides the old and new parts of town. It was built between 1619 and 1622. The convent is a prime attraction for tourists, thanks to its historical and artistic treasures including the wood altar and choir and a painting titled "Crucifixion" attributed to Van Dyck. Monterosso is one of the villages of Cinque Terre, in Italy. Travelling southward from Milan, Monterosso is the first town and the most touristed, since it boasts a proper beach and is home to several larger, fancier hotels. Cinque Terre is a string of five centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline in the Liguria region of Italy. In each of the five towns of the region, colorful houses and ancient vineyards cling to steep terraces and fishing boats bob in harbors. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
