Description
In the 21st Century, it is easy to forget that Portugal was once a dominant European power in the realm of global exploration. King Manuel who ruled Portugal from 1495 erected the Jeronimos Monastery and the Church of Santa Maria de Belem (near Lisbon) as a 'thank you' for the discoveries made by early Portuguese explorers. The church became a house of prayer for seamen leaving or entering the port. This is the main altar, where nearly everything survived the 1755 earthquake that devastated Lisbon. The complex was financed in part with 'pepper money', a 5% tax on spices brought back from India beginning with Vasco de Gama. Together with the Jeronimos Monastery, today this is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
