Description
We visited the Rafael Trejo Boxing Gym in Old Havana, Cuba, an open air training facility for local boxing enthusiasts. It is snuggled between two three-story apartment buildings on a side street off the main tourist drag. Walking inside you discover an open area with a single well-worn boxing ring in the middle of the courtyard. On the two opposite sides of the enclave lie modest bleachers for the spectators. Down below some of the bleachers is what appears to be an abandoned room but in fact is the weight room. Cuba has a very proud tradition of boxers and boxing excellence, which makes this weight room all the more impressive. Rafael Trejo Boxing Gym is the oldest boxing gym in Havana, having been named after the revolutionary hero, Rafael Trejo who was murdered in 1930 at the age of 20.
