Description
Seemingly oblivious to the flood of tourists in the Cinque Terre region of Italy, this worker patiently tends his garden. I would see workers daily as I made my way up and down the hills to my B&B in Riomaggiore. People have tended crops on these hillsides for centuries. One website states: 'Since Roman times the farmers here have been conjuring small miracles from these slopes'. However, it is not natural farmland. It has been chiselled from the cliffs and if it was left, it would quickly disappear. The farms are propped up by miles and miles of stone walls, creating the characteristic terraces on the hillsides. Cooperative farmers in the area grow basil, garlic and pine nuts for a local factory which makes pesto sauce for pasta. Lemons are also a common crop, and lemoncello one of the wonderful products.
