Description
The Fountain Saint Sulpice or Fountain of the Four Bishops sits in the center of the Place Saint Sulpice in Paris France. The large public square was built as a tranquil garden in the Latin Quarter. The fountain was added between 1844 and 1848 and designed by the same architect who designed the tomb of Napoleon. This was considered a 'monumental fountain', or one that could be used for purely decorative purposes once hundreds of other fountains were constructed to improve the city's water supply. The theme of the fountain had to be religious since it was in front of the Church of Saint Sulpice. The final fountain had two distinct parts; the bottom fountain itself, composed of three octagonal basins and the top quadrilateral edifice. The second basin was decorated with sculptures of lions made of stone, which had the coat of arms of Paris; and the third had bowls with masks which spouted water. The edifice on top with four niches, with a dome, corinthian pilasters, and niches which contained the statues of the four bishops of the 17th century famous for their eloquence. Similar to any public edifice before or since, it had its detractors. From Wikipedia: "first, because it hid the entrance of the church; second, because of the incoherence of the iconography and details; one critic noted that the vases pouring water were 'veritable cooking pots.' Describing the lions, another critic wrote that 'everything about them shows their irritation at the water pouring onto their rear ends.' Somehow this totally destroys notions of elegance and refinement that we may harbor of Paris! Saint Sulpice Fountain has been listed as a Historical Monument since 1926.
