Description
It was a cloudy day, threatening to rain all day, but clear enough to enjoy the view of Lake Wanaka from atop Mou Waho Island. No one lives on Mou Waho. The island enjoys special protection by the New Zealand Department of Conservation as a scientific reserve and is the focal point for conservation efforts. The island has been cleared of introduced pests such as rats, stoats and possums, thus making it safe for the native species to live and breed. You are likely to see the rare flightless Buff Weka (extinct on the mainland since 1920) on Mou Waho, along with mountain stone weta of the genus Deinacrida, which is Greek for "terrible grasshopper (an apt description)! Mou Waho is only accessible by boat. Along with the conservation message you receive during your visit to Mou Waho, you are also treated to fabulous views of the surrounding landscape.
