Description
You can enjoy the art inside the Louvre and you can also enjoy the art that is the building itself! In the courtyard within the three wings of the museum you can see the famous modern glass pyramid amid the gorgeous 'old world' architecture. Even within the classic look to the lamp post, you see evidence of modern cost-conserving light bulbs! The Louvre Museum is housed in the Louvre Palace, originally built as a fortress in the late 12th century. The building was extended many times to form the present Louvre Palace. During the French Revolution, the National Assembly decreed that the Louvre should be used as a museum to display the nation's masterpieces. One of the more recent extensions occurred in 1983 when French President Francois Mitterrand proposed relocating the Finance Ministry, and allowing displays throughout all three wings building.
