Description
In the Cinque Terre town of Manarola the houses cling to the rocky cliff above the harbor. The harbor tiny and made only slightly less dangerous by a breakwater. During bad weather the boats are 'pulled ashore' as seen here, but if you notice, this is far above the water! A large I-bean crane (not seen here but just to the left) is used to lift and lower the boats from the harbor below. Manarola also has some wonderful deep water swimming in a small pool behind and below the row of boats seen here. Cinque Terre is a string of five centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline in the Liguria region of Italy. In each of the five towns of the region, colorful houses and ancient vineyards cling to steep terraces and fishing boats bob in harbors. The five towns are a hikers tourism resort paradise. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cinque Terre isn't undiscovered, but sometimes you can find a bit of calm in the touristic storm!
