Description
Monterosso al Mare in the Cinque Terre region of Italy seems more of a blend of old and new than the other four Cinque Terre towns. Older construction sits nearer the shoreline, including the old clock tower while some newer construction dots the hillside. If you didn't know, you might not even notice that the town was nearly wiped out in floods and mudslides in 2011. Even the mayor said at the time, "Monterosso no longer exists". Thanks to the heroic efforts of the citizens, Monterosso is back and again hosts thousands of tourists ever year on the beaches and the local hiking trails. Cinque Terre is a string of five centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline in the Liguria region of Italy. In each of the five towns of the region, colorful houses and ancient vineyards cling to steep terraces and fishing boats bob in harbors. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
