Description
Not far from Barcelona is the mountain aerie of Montserrat. It is well known as the site of the Benedictine abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat, which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat sanctuary and which is identified by some with the location of the Holy Grail in Arthurian myth. On the winter day of our visit, the funicular which took you partway up the mountain from the monastery was closed leaving hiking as the only option for getting up the mountain. I hadn't researched the hiking options so the path which led to Sant Jeroni seemed as good a hike as any. The summit was 'only' 1236 m or just over 4000' and turns out to be the highest point in the area. The first third of the trail however seemed like it went straight up! A local hiking society said the difficulty level was moderate to hard and the physical condition required was FIT! The round trip distance was 10 km but seemed more! Luckily there were beautiful views down the steep valley, requiring frequent photo stops!

Beautiful capture. You can really see the size of it with the building in the valley!
