Description
The Pantheon in Rome has inspired many buildings around the world, including the Jefferson Memorial in Washington DC, and here, at the Pantheon in Paris. The Pantheon was originally built by King Louis XV as a church dedicated to St. Genevieve after he had recovered from a serious illness. It took 34 years to complete. But when it was finished in 1791, it was in the midst of the French Revolution The government changed the church into a mausoleum, a place to burry exceptional Frenchmen who had sacrificed their lives for their country or who had done something great for France. The Pantheon flipped back and forth to a church over the years but eventually assumed its lasting role as a burial place for martyrs and brilliant French citizens for good. Some of the people buried here are Voltaire, Rousseau, Victor Hugo, and Marie Curie. At the top it says “To the great men, the grateful homeland”.
