I stopped at Peyto Lake early one morning as I headed north along the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park in Alberta Canada. To my great disappointment it was socked in with fog but I could tell it was going to be spectacular! On my way back south later in the day, the clouds had cleared so I made the short detour and hike back to the overlook. During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the water a bright, turquoise color. This is one of the best views of the lake, seen from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefields Parkway. The lake was named for Bill Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area.
