Description
The view OF Il Duomo's roof (the cathedral in Milan Italy) is probably more interesting than the FROM the roof! Up atop Il Duomo it's all about the details! The interplay of the spires, the repetition of the design, the complexity of the details, all largely invisible from the ground. There are thousands of spires and statues, each one a little different than the last. It's an amazing sight from below, and even more interesting up close. The Duomo is the most important gothic architectural work in all of Italy. It took nearly six centuries to complete, starting in 1385 and having final finishes applied as late at 1965. It is the second largest church in Italy after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and the third in the world. Until a few years ago it was the tallest building of Milan.

Wonderful perspective, Joan! Thank you for the description. Isn't it mindboggling to think that these magnificent buildings were created with hand tools? The pride in the work, illustrated by each piece an individual. Our NYS Capitol building is the same and I used to love to point that out to tourists.
