Description
Just around the corner from Sacre Coeur Basilica in Montmartre, but seemingly a world away, is the Church of Saint Peter of Montmartre. After the crush of the crowds, duck in here for some peace and quiet, and a sense of history. Saint Peter of Montmartre is said to be one the oldest surviving churches in Paris. Built on the site of a Roman temple and a 7th-century Merovingian church, it was consecrated in 1147. It is a jumble of medieval and later styles. Four marble Roman columns with Merovingian capitals (7th century) can be seen in the church. The nave is Romanesque but is covered with a 15th-century vault and flanked by aisles added in 1765 and c.1838. The transept and choir are also Romanesque, and the choir has one of the earliest ribbed vaults in Paris (c.1147). The apse was rebuilt in the late 12th century. The windows are filled with stained glass windows of the 20th century. According to the earliest biography of Saint Ignatius Loyola, the church is the location at which the vows were taken that led to the founding of the Society of Jesus. St. Pierre de Montmartre has been listed as a Historic Monument by the State since 1923.
