Description
King Louis IX thought he had purchased Christ's crown of thorns, and he built Sainte-Chapelle to house that treasure. Despite its amazingly beautiful 13th century stained glass, the cost of building the chapel was nowhere near what the king spent to purchase the relic. However, the possession of this relic made him quite powerful. The Sainte Chapelle (Holy Chapel) was built in the Gothic style in just seven years (consecrated in 1248), an amazing feat for those days. At the time it stood within a palace complex but today stands with the Palais de Justice. The exterior is quite humble; you have to go inside to see the splendor of the 6,458 square feet of stained glass windows of the upper chapel, surrounded by delicate painted stonework. Although damaged during the French Revolution, and restored in the 19th century, it is one of the most extensive 13th-century stained glass collection anywhere in the world.
