Description
The Church of San Lorenzo Maggiore (Chiesa di San Lorenzo Maggiore) in Milan Italy has an architectural history as convoluted as most churches, especially considering that the original structure was built in the late 4th century-early 5th century! Built upon and incorporating the remains of a royal Roman palace, San Lorenzo can take its place among Milan's oldest churches. Over the centuries the church was ravaged by fire several times, and it was last rebuilt in the 16th century. But the striking octagonal floor plan is original, thus the long aisles seen in other churches are absent here in favor of a more semicircular nave.
