Description
Quite far off the touristic path in Madrid Spain is the Pontifical Basilica of San Miguel. It is a Catholic church located in San Justo Street adjacent to the archiepiscopal palace, in the heart of the zone known as the Madrid of the Austrias. It is the church of the Apostolic Nunciature to the Kingdom of Spain of the Holy See (which is a diplomatic post of the Holy See, whose representative is called the Apostolic Nuncio with the rank of an ambassador). Construction began in 1739, on the site of the parish church of Sts. Justus and Pastor, and was completed in 1745. In spite of being relatively small, it is one of the most unique constructions of the Spanish baroque, for the unique convex form of its facade. This is not very common in Spain, and is the only one in the baroque style in Madrid. It was decreed a Minor Basilica in 1930 and declared National Historic Artistic Monument in November, 1984.
