Description
The flying buttresses of Notre Dame may be more famous but those of Saint Barbara's Church in Kutna Hora (Czech Republic) are equally beautiful! St. Barbara's is the most spectacular gothic cathedral in the Czech Republic, a land noted for its Gothic cathedrals, and it is a UNESCO world heritage site. Also notable is the unique tent-like roof. The cathedral sits atop a cliff, providing an awe-inspiring view both of the church from afar and also of the surrounding lands from the church. Saint Barbara's Church is a Roman Catholic church in Kutna Hora (Bohemia) in the style of a Cathedral, and is sometimes referred to as the Cathedral of St Barbara. St Barbara is the patron saint of miners, which was highly appropriate for a town whose wealth was based entirely upon its silver mines. Construction began in 1388, but because work on the church was interrupted several times, it was not completed until 1905. The original design was for a much larger church, perhaps twice the size of the present building. Construction, however, depended on the prosperity of the town's silver mines, which became much less productive. After 1588 it was occupied by Jesuits who gradually changed the structure into Baroque style, though parts still remain in Gothic style.
