Description
Construction of the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Tarragona Spain began in 1184, over the remains of an old Christian basilica that, in turn, was erected on top of a 10th-century Arab mosque. It was made in Romanesque style, in transition to Gothic. The octagonal tower-dome (just visible at the top of the photo) was built in the mid-13th century. The stalls of the choir were made in the 15th century, in oak wood. The organ is from the late 16th century. The high altarpiece was made in the 15th century with polychromatic alabaster. Its most striking feature is the trilogy of sculptures representing the Virgin, Saint Tecla and Saint Paul.
