Description
You get an entirely different feel for the city of Toledo Spain if you cross the Tagus River and view it form the opposite bank. The Tagus River cradles the city of Toledo on three sides and as you walk around the perimeter, various parts of the scenic city slowly reveal themselves. Here is the cathedral spire in the center with the Alcazar to the right. The cathedral of Toledo is one of the three 13th-century High Gothic cathedrals in Spain and is considered the pinnacle of the Gothic style in Spain. The Alcazar is a stone fortification located in the highest part of Toledo. Once used as a Roman palace in the 3rd century, it was restored under Charles I (Holy Roman Emperor Charles V) and his son Philip II of Spain in the 1540s. It played a pivotal, albeit controversial, role in the Spanish Civil War. Toledo is the capital of the province of Toledo and the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage and historical co-existence of Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures.
