Description
You can climb the 400 steps to the top of the tower (Torre del Mangia) in Siena Italy for a view of the town and countryside and I really wanted to, only not after 11 hours of flying, a 3 hour bus ride, and navigating a medieval city to find my B&B. Long story short, that's exactly when I ended up doing the climb. The tower is an "arrestingly beautiful combination of height and elegant slightness of design" made of brick and white travertine. It is located in the Piazza del Campo, Siena's premier square, adjacent to the Palazzo Pubblico (Town Hall). When it was built between 1338 and 1348 it was one of the tallest secular towers in medieval Italy. At 88 metres (289 feet), it is third tallest after Cremona's Torrazzo (112 m; 367 ft) and the Asinelli tower in Bologna (97 m; 318 ft).
