Description
The Church and Monastery of Saint Francis (Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco) stands a few blocks from Plaza Mayor in Trinidad Cuba. The rooftop view of its tower is seen from the Museo Historico Municipal, and this view alone is worth the price of admission to the museum. The Church of Saint Francis was built in 1813 by Franciscan monks, became a parish church in 1848, and in 1895 was converted into a garrison for Spanish troops. The church fell into disrepair, and in 1920 much of it was demolished. Only some of the outer buildings and the bell tower still stand. Today, this picturesque building accommodates the Museo Nacional de Lucha Contra Bandidos (National Museum of the Struggle against Bandits). Trinidad is situated in the province of Sancti Spiritus in the central part of Cuba. It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988.
