After a morning hike, I was back in Vernazza in the Cinque Terre for a gelato and a rest in the shade before setting off on an afternoon hike. In Vernazza, this is where the action is, at the harbor. Behind the wall is the Piazza Marconi, filled with tables, cafes and lounging tourists. Vernazza's harborfront church, Santa Margherita, is also prominent with its octagonal tower. This is a calm day, with some boats pulled up on the beach. In rough weather, they would be pulled all the way up onto the piazza supplanting the cafe tables. Cinque Terre is a string of five centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline in the Liguria region of Italy. In each of the five towns of the region, colorful houses tumble down rocky cliffs, ancient vineyards cling to steep terraces and fishing boats bob in harbors. The five towns are a hikers tourism resort paradise. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
