Description
Just when you finish a steep climb along the hiking trails in the Cinque Terre region of Italy, and just when you start to feel tired, sweaty, thirsty, and just a little bit sorry for yourself, you look around at the vineyards and notice to your chagrin that people work here ALL. THE. TIME. You see the evidence of their work in the hoses for watering, the barrels for water (or fertilizer?), the staked grape vines, the carefully constructed and repaired walls. This section of vineyard is not too far into the hike from Vernazza to Monterrosso. The traditional cultivated terraces in Cinque Terre are ancient and there are miles and miles of these stone walls. For centuries, the local economy was built on wine and olive oil and the terracing protected against flooding. Cinque Terre is a string of five centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline in the Liguria region of Italy. In each of the five towns of the region, colorful houses and ancient vineyards cling to steep terraces and fishing boats bob in harbors. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
