When I planned my trip to Florence Italy, I decided to stay close to the Piazza del Duomo for convenience and found a great B&B right on the square! I couldn't believe the eye-popping view when I got to my room, where I was REALLY close to Il Duomo (aka, the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore or Saint Mary of the Flower) and Baptistery of St John! I just loved opening the shutters in the morning to this view, and also have this amazing view at all times of the day. The cathedral facade, seen in part on the right is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white. Groundbreaking was in 1296 and was completed in 1436. The decoration of the exterior, however, was not actually completed until 1887. The Baptistery, seen at the left edge, was first described in 897 as a minor basilica.
