The ancient Baths of Diocletian in Rome Italy were transformed with the help of Michelangelo into the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli or Saint Mary of the Angels. The church is a basilica church built inside what was the frigidarium of the Baths of Diocletian near the Piazza della Repubblica. Santa Maria degli Angeli was the official state church during the Kingdom of Italy (1870-1946). More recently, national burials have been held in the church. The church hosts the tombs of several Italian commanders responsible for winning World War I on the Italian front. Also today the Basilica is used for many ceremonies, included the funeral of soldiers killed abroad. One attraction within the church is the Meridian Line. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, Pope Clement XI commissioned the building of a meridian line, a sort of sundial, within the basilica.
