When you climb the dome of Il Duomo in Florence Italy, you immediately notice a prominent church located to the east. It is the Basilica di Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross), the principal Franciscan church in Florence, and a minor basilica of the Roman Catholic Church. The present basilica was built around 1295, on the site where the first Franciscan friars to arrive in Florence had a small oratory. The nave is wide and well-lit, with massive widely-spaced piers supporting pointed arches. On entering the basilica, in the Florentine gothic style, you immediately notice the tall narrow stained glass windows around the main altar. A fundamental feature of early Franciscan churches was the frescoed narration, in simple and clear terms, of the stories of Christ, of St. Francis and of other saints. The 14th century decoration for the Chapel of the high altar illustrates the Story of the True Cross.

Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
