Description
The Blue Mosque in Istanbul Turkey is such a popular site for pilgrims and tourists alike that you need to go early in the day in order to find the peace and quiet of the courtyard. Lucky for me, my bed and breakfast was only a five minute walk from the mosque so I could walk over anytime to take advantage of the different lighting throughout the day. It was built from 1609 to 1616, during the rule of Ahmed I. Its Klliye contains a tomb of the founder, a madrasah and a hospice. While still used as a mosque, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque has also become a popular tourist attraction. The facade of the spacious forecourt was built in the same manner as the facade of the Sleymaniye Mosque, except for the addition of the turrets on the corner domes. The court is about as large as the mosque itself and is surrounded by a continuous vaulted arcade which provides beautiful light and shadow. The central hexagonal fountain is small relative to the courtyard. This was a lovely way to spend the pre-breakfast hours every day during my trip to Istanbul.
