Description
All around the viewing area at Athabasca Falls in Jasper National Park there are railings, but there are also caution signs warning how slippery the rocks around the falls can be, and how fatal a fall can be. Sadly there are also many benches with memorial plaques for people who have died at the falls. It is not difficult to imagine the danger. The sound is deafening, the flow roiling and wild and turbulent. It gives you the shivers! Athabasca Falls is on the Athabasca River, 30 km south of Jasper, Alberta, Canada. Athabasca Falls is not the highest waterfall (at only 23 m) or the widest waterfall in the Canadian Rockies, but it is probably one of the most powerful! Words are inadequate to convey its power; you just stand in awe. It is at its most ferocious in summer, as seen here, thundering over the cliff.
