Description
A popular outing in Milan Italy is the grounds of Sforza Castle (Castell Sforzesco). Especially popular for family photos on a spring day were the poppies in the courtyard! Seen along with the poppies on the right is the main tower of Sforza Castle called Torre del Filarete. The round tower to the left is Torre del Carmine, one of the 'corners' of the castle complex. Sforza Castle was built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, on the remains of a 14th-century fortification. Less than a century after its completion in 1521, the tower, which had been converted into a gunpowder magazine, exploded. The current edifice is the result of a tireless study of the available documents in order to reconstruct the tower as faithfully to the renaissance original. Inaugurated in 1905, the Filarete tower was dedicated to King Umberto I, assassinated only 5 years earlier. It now houses several of the city's museums and art collections.
