Description
Driving through Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota is a visual treat: mountains, meadows, rolling hills. It is tempting to speed through (although the 35 mph limit is enforced) if you are anxious to see the park's stars, the 1500 head of North American Bison. But force yourself to slow down and enjoy the ride especially on a blue sky sunny day like this one! Custer State Park is South Dakota's largest and first state park. It Encompasses 71,000 acres in the Black Hills and is home to abundant wildlife including whitetail and mule deer, antelope, mountain goats, elk, coyotes, burros, bighorn sheep, birds, wild turkeys and prairie dogs. The roads and campgrounds were all laid out by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s Great Depression. After the 2020 Pandemic, maybe we can use a modern day version of the CCC to update, maintain, and build public facilities!
