This is literally a mess of marine iguanas! Not surprisingly, that is the word used to describe a group of iguanas! After some hard few hours foraging in the cold water for algae, nothing says comfort like sprawling on some hot lava rocks with a mess of your best friends. Marine iguanas are found only in the Galapagos Islands. They have the unique ability to forage in the sea for algae, which is facilitated by their blunt snouts and sharp teeth. In between feeding bouts, they bask in the sun to warm up. Their dark coloration aids in heat absorption. Fun Fact: Early European visitors were repulsed by iguanas. “The [i]guanas are small, and of a sooty black, which, if possible, heightens their native ugliness. Indeed, so disgusting is their appearance, that no one on board could be prevailed on, to take them as food.” (Captain James Colnett, 1798. “The black Lava rocks on the beach are frequented by large (2–3 ft [0.6–0.9 m]), most disgusting, clumsy Lizards. They are as black as the porous rocks over which they crawl & seek their prey from the Sea. Somebody calls them 'imps of darkness'. They assuredly well-become the land they inhabit.” Charles Darwin, 1835. UNESCO declared the Galapagos a Natural Heritage Site for Humanity in 1978, and the Galapagos National Park a Biosphere Reserve in 1984.
