From atop the 'rockpile' at Moraine Lake near Lake Louise in Banff National Park (Alberta Canada) you can watch the day move from the quiet of dawn to the activity of another day. On a still summer morning, you see the reflections of the surrounding mountains and the green pines along the shoreline. The canoes sit at the boathouse ready for the visitors who will venture away from the shoreline for a different of view the spectacular surroundings. Moraine Lake is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, at an elevation of approximately 6,183 feet (1,885 m). The surrounding peaks of the Wenkchemna Range all top out at over 10,000' (~3000 m). Its distinctive color is due to the refraction of light off fine-grained, silt-sized particles of rock, generated by the grinding of bedrock by the glaciers and deposited in the lake on a continual basis. The Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks of Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho along with three provincial parks comprise a UNESCO World Heritage site.
