Description
Imagine bumping along a rough road in the hot New Mexico desert in an un-conditioned car for mile upon unending mile. Then imagine the welcome sight of a building on the horizon! Painted on the front are the words "Cold Drinks"! That is how I imagine it was like in the early to mid-20th century along Route 66 west of Tucumcari. Today the interstate is a stone's throw from this building but it is the big truck stops at the various exits that attract all the traffic. In its heyday in the early to mid 20th century, Route 66 served as a primary route for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The road supported the economies of the communities through which it passed and people doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway. Today, this and other remnants of the ‘mother road’ slowly decay.
