Description
There are plenty of beaches and coastal hiking trails in Abel Tasman National Park in New Zealand. So when offered the opportunity to ‘Get off the beaten track into the ancient Gondwanan beech forest of the upper Wainui Valley’, we took it! We let a local eco-tour company do the winding drive up Takaka hill, passing through the fabled Canaan Downs to the trail head near this sheep farm. (For those not in the know (including me) Canaan Downs is famous as a site in ‘Lord of the Rings’.) And Canaan Downs inspired the name of the tour: the Promised Land Walking Tour. When we arrived at the trail head, it was raining and we were offered the opportunity to not take the hike. Naturally, we did not take the offer, and had fun hopping/wading over and through streams, through the fields and along some muddy forest tracks. A weka joined us for lunch, hoping for a handout. By the time we finished the hike, the rain had stopped and there was even a patch of blue in the sky! We even got a chance to wander over the sheep farm to enjoy this great view!
