Description
What I remember most about the summer day I visited the Texas A&M campus in college Station TX was how hot it was! Despite being on the verge of heat exhaustion, I still paused to take some photos of the Academic Building peeking over the Century Tree. The Academic Building was built in 1914 after 'Old Main' was destroyed by fire in 1912, when there was just over 1,000 students and a handful of other buildings on campus. It is one of only a handful of buildings on the campus over 100 years old. As buildings younger than the campus landmark are torn down for new buildings, the Academic Building continues to stand the test of time and exist in the memories of generations of students. To the left in this photo is part of the spreading Century Tree (a live oak tree), about which tradition states that you're supposed to go under this tree with the person you wish to spend the rest of your life with. The Academic Building is built in the Beaux-Arts classical design. It is a four-storied reinforced concrete structure faced with brick and crowned with a copper dome. The front facade has four Ionic columns supporting the classical pediment. In front of the Academic Building is the Academic Plaza, which is the site of a wide range of traditional campus events.
