Description
I have to admit that I hesitated a bit before taking this route into Toledo at night! But soon I saw it was well-used. The map of Toledo Spain shows this as the Puerta de Alcantara, a gate into the city at the end of the Alcantara Bridge. One source stated that the gate was undoubtedly one of the oldest entries to the city, when the city was the Roman city of Toletum. It became blocked by a toll-keepers cottage at some point in its history, and when it fell into disuse another set of steps leading up the outside of the walls took its place. The old sunken passageway because disused, and when the restoration was decided it was entirely full of refuse. Today it leads from the Alcantara Bridge straight up to the Alcazar, a direct but steep route!
