Description
The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos (Spanish for "Castle of the Christian Monarchs"), also known as the Alcázar of Córdoba, is a medieval alcázar located in the historic centre of Córdoba. Its construction was ordered by the King Alfonso XI of Castile in the year 1328. I had read that even if you were ‘museumed out’, it was worth a visit here just to see the gardens. Certainly they would be more spectacular in the spring than in January, but even in winter you can appreciate the elegant fountains and ponds and the wide variety of seasonal plants, palm trees, cypresses, and orange and lemon trees. Here can be seen the Tower of the Lions (La torre de los Leones) in the background. It is the longest standing tower, dating back to the 13th Century, and is named after gargoyles in the shape of lions which are found on the uppermost section of the tower. The Alcázar has been declared a Cultural Interest Heritage since 1931 and forms part of the Historic Center of Córdoba that was declared part of World Heritage by UNESCO in 1994.
