Description
Ever wonder what goes on behind the camera? Behind the scene funny story here: we had arranged to arrive at our pick up place early so as to arrive at Aldeyjarfoss Waterfall in Iceland at sunrise, while another group had arranged to arrive just a little bit later. The downhill walk from the parking area to the rim where we set up for photos was a little steep and very icy. Even with crampons, you needed to step carefully especially with camera equipment. While we were setting up to shoot this scene, we watched in amazement as one guest in the next group ran, slid, careened and otherwise charged downhill from the parked vehicles ahead of whoever he could so to ‘get there first’! In his zeal to ‘get the shot’ he actually tried to set up his tripod directly in front of where we were standing, which as you can see isn’t too far from the cliff edge! In front…a peaceful scene; behind….chaos! Aldeyjarfoss Waterfall in northern Iceland is a little off the beaten track, particularly in winter. You likely can’t drive there in your own vehicle but need to enlist the services of companies that have ‘super jeeps’ with gigantic tires that can take you through snow, ice, and slush. Along the way, they make a stop to deflate the tires of the vehicle for better traction. Still, in the slush along the route we nearly got stuck a few times but after nearly an hour, we arrived at a parking area. It was very windy and cold and still dark. We put on crampons, shouldered our gear, and slid down the hill to the cliff overlooking the falls to be greeted by this spectacular site. The 20-meter high waterfall seems mightier than its height would suggest. It is a powerful stream of glacial water forcing its way from the Icelandic Highland between basalt columnar cliffs. The Skjalfandafljot river and waterfall are carrying tons of soil and dirt from under the glacier Vatnajokull ice cap to the northern shore where the river meets the open sea. In the delicate early morning light on a clear day, it was absolutely stunning!
