Aldeyjarfoss Waterfall in northern Iceland is a little off the beaten track, particularly in winter. You likely can’t drive there in your own vehicle but need to enlist the services of companies that have ‘super jeeps’ with gigantic tires that can take you through snow, ice, and slush. Along the way, they make a stop to deflate the tires of the vehicle for better traction. Still, in the slush along the route we nearly got stuck a few times but after nearly an hour, we arrived at a parking area. It was very windy and cold and still dark. We put on crampons, shouldered our gear, and slid down the hill to the cliff overlooking the falls to be greeted by this spectacular site. The 20-meter high waterfall seems mightier than its height would suggest. It is a powerful stream of glacial water forcing its way from the Icelandic Highland between basalt columnar cliffs.
