Description
A trip to Goblin Valley State Park (Utah, USA) is like stepping onto the surface of Mars. It is a landscape featuring thousands of hoodoos, referred to locally as goblins. Wandering through the park, you imagine the various shapes taking on the forms of humans, animals or inanimate objects. To me, this overview made me think of a convention of aliens, sitting patiently and waiting for the instructions from their leader. The formations are composed of sandstone and because of its uneven hardness, some patches resisted erosion better than others over the centuries. The softer material was removed by wind and water leaving the goblins behinds. Further erosion by water and wind shaped and smoothed the goblins. While Native Americans clearly knew this area, it wasn’t until the late 1920s that Americans discovered it. One of those men, Arthur Chaffin, returned in 1949 to explore and photograph the area, after which is was acquired by the state of Utah and in 1964 designated as a state park. In an infamous incident in October 2013 that is a testament to the stupidity of humans “a delicately balanced hoodoo was intentionally knocked over by a Boy Scout leader while two other men watched, one of whom recorded a video that was later uploaded to the Internet. The men claimed that the hoodoo appeared ready to fall, and that it was intentionally knocked over to prevent park visitors from being hurt.” To quote further from Wikipedia: “The hoodoo formation had existed for many millions of years, having formed out of rock that dated back as far as 165 million years. The average rate of erosion of a hoodoo is approximately 2–4 feet (0.6-1.3 m) every 100 years.” The two leaders were dismissed from the Boy Scouts and were arraigned on various felony charges. They pled guilty to lesser charges and received a sentence of one-year probation plus fines and case-related fees. Sadly, the damage can never be undone.
