It is likely that if you come and go through Milano Centrale, the main railway station in Milan Italy, you will see the sculpture of “The Apple Made Whole Again” in the piazza in front of the station. You might just pass it by thinking “hmmm…an apple”. Yes, it is a giant white apple with a bite taken out of it that has been repaired with steel stitching. It weighs 11 tons and stands 8 m high. But to the artist who created the piece, Michelangelo Pistoletto, it is much more. He says of it: “Human history is in its third stage. The first was natural paradise, when we were inside the apple. With the bite of the apple we left nature and went on to the second stage, artificial paradise, that now devours the apple itself, i.e. ravages the whole of nature. It is now time for us to move to the third stage, where the artificial and the natural worlds finally come together. In the Third Paradise, science and technology, rather than turning us away from nature, help us to save nature and with it the whole of humanity.”
