Description
Apples Church cemetery is an historic cemetery in the town of Thurmont, MD. The church burial ground is the final resting place for people who died at least as far back as 1782. Lichen, moss, and age have caused many of the gravestones to deteriorate. The peaceful one-acre cemetery is the final resting grounds for 700 people. Some are Native Americans who have little more than etched rocks to mark their graves, while others are massive, gleaming granite stones with long inscriptions. At least three or four graves are of men who fought in the Revolutionary War. Apples Church itself dates back to 1760 when a deed was issued for a church on property donated by Peter Appel. Due to the deterioration of some of the headstones in the cemetery, a fundraising effort is underway to pay for restoration.
