Description
Many cities have a triumphal arch and Barcelona Spain is no different. From afar it may look like 'just' another arch but up close you can really appreciate the architectural detail. Barcelona's triumphal arch was built as the main access gate for the 1888 Barcelona World Fair by architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas. The architect designed a monument of classical style and proportions as an allegory of Barcelona's respect for the nations and provinces taking part in the exhibition. He chose to build the arch from brick and decorate it with sculptural motifs evocative of the neo-Mudejar style that had its origins in Moorish architecture and which was very much in vogue in Spain at the time. The combination of red brick with the series of friezes around the arch, make it a singularly beautiful landmark. If you take a close look at the arch you'll soon realize that the Arc de Triomf was the gateway to the modern Barcelona of the late 19th century. The frieze overlooking the Passeig de Sant Joan (which is the side shown here) depicts Barcelona welcoming the nations and the frieze facing the park shows the city presenting medals to the exhibition participants. There are reliefs on one side symbolizing agriculture and industry, and commerce and art on the other. At the top of the arch the shields of the 49 Spanish provinces are presided over by the coat of arms of the city of Barcelona. The arch presides over Passeig de Lluis Companys, a wide promenade leading to the Ciutadella Park. It is located at the top of the promenade, where it meets Passeig de Sant Joan.
