Description
Along with the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe is probably the most recognizable monument in Paris. It stands in the center of the Place Charles de Gaulle with 12 avenues radiating outwards, one of which is the Champs-Elysees. Climb to the top for a view of Paris and also to watch the traffic from these 12 streets dance in and out of the gigantic roundabout that circles the arc. Spend some time at ground level marveling at the symbolism of the detailed carvings and statues. The Arc de Triomphe was commissioned in 1806 after the victory at Austerlitz by Emperor Napoleon at the peak of his fortunes, but due to changing politics it was not completed until 1836. Famous military victory marches focus on the Arc, and have included the Germans in 1871, the French in 1919, the Germans in 1940, and the French and Allies in 1944. Underneath the Arc lies the French Tomb on the Unknown Soldier from World War I, marked by an eternal flame. President and Mrs. Kennedy visited Paris and the French Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in 1961 and after the president's assassination, Mrs. Kennedy requested that a similar eternal flame be placed next to her husband's grave. The French President, Charles de Gaulle, attended the funeral and witnessed the lighting of that flame.
