Description
This is a upward looking view of some of the domes and steeples of the buildings in the Piazza del Popolo in Rome. Piazza del Popolo is a large urban square in Rome. The name in modern Italian means "People's Square", but historically it derives from the poplars after which the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, in the northeast corner of the piazza, takes its name. The piazza lies inside the northern gate in the Aurelian Walls, once the Porta Flaminia of ancient Rome, and now called the Porta del Popolo. Before the age of railroads, it was the traveller's first view of Rome upon arrival. Today the piazza is a pedestrian zone with a large open space reminiscent of St Peter's Square. Two fountains by Giovanni Ceccarini flank the piazza on the east and west sides, while the churches of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, Santa Maria in Montesanto, and Santa Maria del Popolo anchor the piazza on the north and south. An Egyptian obelisk sits in the center.
