Description
It looks like a giant bug when viewed from its end but it is L'Hemisferic, the IMAX cinema at the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia Spain, a unique complex devoted to scientific and cultural dissemination. The building is meant to resemble a giant eye when viewed from the side. Its design resembles an eyelid that opens to access the surrounding water pool. The Hemesferic also known as the planetarium or the 'eye of knowledge, and is the centerpiece of the City of Arts and Sciences. It was the first building completed in 1998. The entire complex is the most important modern tourist destinations in the city of Valencia and one of the 12 Treasures of Spain. From a photographer's point of view it is a treasure, similar to other architectural designs by Santiago Calatrava (e.g., Milwaukee Art Museum, Dallas' Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, Barcelona's Olympic Park Communications Tower). The City of Arts and Sciences is situated at the end of the former riverbed of the river Turia, which was drained and rerouted after a catastrophic flood in 1957. The old riverbed was turned into a picturesque sunken park and the water features of the City of Arts and Sciences are meant to bring water back to the area.
