Description
It looks like it was built recently but Armstrong County courthouse in Claude TX was built in 1912 in the Classical Revival style. Classical Revival style buildings often have massive columns with classical Corinthian, Doric or Ionic capitals (certainly seen here). They are also not very ornate, and after a long drive...well, maybe just a little disappointing. The county is older than the courthouse though. Armstrong County was formed from Bexar County in 1876, and organized in 1890, with Claude as the county seat. Claude Ayers, railroad engineer for the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway had the town of Armstrong City renamed in his honor when he drove the first train to town in 1887. Armstrong County and Claude are part of the Amarillo "Metropolitan Statistical Area", with Claude located only 30 miles east of Amarillo.
