Description
The hand of Constantine is part of the Colossus of Constantine, which was a colossal statue of the late Roman emperor Constantine the Great (c. 280-337) that once occupied the west apse of the Basilica of Maxentius near the Forum in Rome. Portions of the Colossus now reside in the Courtyard of the Palazzo dei Conservatori of the Musei Capitolini, on the Capitoline Hill, above the west end of the Forum. The head, arms and legs of the colosseus were carved from white marble, while the rest of the body consisted of a brick core and wooden framework, possibly covered with gilded bronze. It is thought the seated, enthroned figures would have been about 40 feet high. This hand may have held a staff. The statue was later pillaged, likely for the bronze portions. The marble portions were brought to light in 1487 and the surviving remnants were brought to the Palazzo dei Conservatori courtyard by Michelangelo.
